The festival of Bhai Dooj holds a special importance for brothers and sisters. The sister puts a vermillion tikka on her brother’s forehead and prays for his long life. The brother vows to protect her from evil forces and gives her a gift.
The festival celebrates the bond of siblings and is known with different names in different parts of the country. For instance, it is known as Bhai Phota in West Bengal, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Yama Dwitiya in southern parts of the country.
Coming to the mythology of this festival, one of the most famous folklores associated with it is of Yamraj and his sister. It is believed that Yamraj, the god of death, arrived at his sister’s place on this day. His sister Yamuna, also known with the name Yami, welcomed him with aarti, offered him sweets and applied tilak on his forehead. Overwhelmed by her love and affection, Yamraj declared that every brother who receives an aarti and tilak from sister would never go to hell. According to another legend, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra after killing the demon Nakasura. She welcomed him with flowers and sweets, and applied tikka on his forehead.
The festival falls on November 9 this year and thanks to technology, you can wish your sibling in case you are unable to meet them on the occasion. Here are some images, cards, greetings, quotes, pictures, GIFs and wallpapers to wish your brother or sister and make this festival a special affair.
